Wanted - gardening graphics/photos (free, creative commons etc)
|

| I'm looking for some free gardening graphics and a couple of 'stock'
photos I could use. It's for a community online newsletter at
http://www.hirwaun.net/ I want to put a good gardening section there as
there's a lively localy community of gardeners.
I've looked at the Wikimedia Commons project, but couldn't find anything
suitable today. Any suggestions folks ?
Cheers

| Darren,
What do you do for a living? Butcher, baker, candlestick maker - send me
some - for nothing - then I'll think about it!
Photographers and graphic designers get absolutely fed up to the back teeth
with freeloloaders like you asking them to give away their work for
nothing - and presumably relinquish moral rights / copyright into the
'bargain?.
Most of the scroungers say they are a charity!
Try www.alamy.com and pay your way in life.

It's like that with printing as well. Many people assume you can do it
for nothing if they are a church or charity whereas you actually do have
to pay for the paper and ink and stuff. One or two of my printer friends
now say that they'll give a donation rather than pay for the entire
printing job for free
I do the gardening club stuff and several other organisations' work for
either free or just cost but if its a big job then you aren't actually
doing anything profitable whilst you print which can be a backwards
step. If I have a link to the 'asker' then I fully understand the
request but otherwise I feel guilty at not helping all and sundry.
Anyway I am surprised about the request as there are some very good
software packages with pictures that you can use freely. Hemera is one.
Also borrowing a digital camera comes to mind?
Photographers, especially commercial ones have to make a living
somehow....

Judging by his lack of manners and understanding, I think we probably
know the answer to that one.
I am looking for good use-able graphics under an open licence (for
example the Creative Commons licence) for a not-for-profit community
newsletter... which happens to involve gardeners.
People who make a living selling photos, don't tend to release them under
unrestrictive and free licences.

But like I say, software such as Hemera gives you lots of free
photographs etc . I use them in my gardening newsletters.
Sometimes though it's also nice to ask the readers to submit
photographs, you may have one or two really expert photographers who
would be only too pleased to submit suitable pictures for you and you'll
be able to stipulate the subjects.

I use http://www.dreamstime.com/ myself. The images are not free, but at a
dollar a photo, very good value for professional pictures :~)
