Flowers which grow dried?

| I wonder if someone could fill in a half-missing memory for us,
When we were children, we had flowers in our back garden which we called
"dried flowers". These grew as crisp, dry petals and we used the flowers in
longer lasting arrangements.
Now, many years later, we can only remember that they existed and not what
they were. We were told they were called "dried flowers" but I doubt that
was even a common name for them, just something children were told.
Does anyone know what we might be remembering? They were quite small flowers
if I recall, smaller than say, a pansy but bigger than a snapdragon. I think
they had a central "puff" of seeds, and came in many colours.
