"Puka Fertilizing" technique for avocado's?

Hello All,

In Heidi Leianuenue Bornhorst's book, "Growing Hawaiian Native Plants",
she writes on page # 22 and discusses "puka fertilizing". I would love
to try it on my avocado trees, here in San Diego County. Has anyone
tried this way to fertilize a tree or shrub?

She says to make the holes "...3" to 8" deep", but not how many.
Secondly, she did not mention how large should the diameter of the hole
be. One or two inches in diameter? Bigger? If the tree is mature [20'
tall] how many holes should I make around the drip line?

Secondly, the white ginger root that we brought home two years ago is
growing out of control! I have some corrugated sheet metal to hammer
into the
ground, so the ginger does not spread any further.

My question is, how deep do these roots grow into the ground? I need to
know, so that I don't cut the metal too short!
