It is Haemanthus albiflos sometimes known as the paintbrush plant. A
native of South Africa, it is very easily grown as long as it isn't
overwatered. Judging by the leaf length, you plant needs just a bit
more light.

Torquay, Coastal South Devon UK
Winter min -2°C. Summer max 34°C.
Growing season: March - November

Many thanks - up until now it has been known by the common name "given
to me by a friend"

It sits on a north facing window sill - will get it moved as I am much
further north than yourself.
