I have just got a c.giganteum bulb, the growing tip is just showing & the
roots are growing white/fibrous.Should i pot it up or plant in the
garden(final position). If in the garden i will dig in lots of leaf mould
..The bulb i think will need a couple more seasons before flowering size.
Thanks Keith

Ray recommends that you put it in a pot and plant it out later.

The mixture sounds fine and Ray says leave it in a sheltered spot unless you
live somewhere with arctic cold. Don't let it get too wet and rot away,
though! Plant it out in its chosen spot next year.

It sounds as if it might be slightly too warm, and being fooled into
premature growth. They like cool root conditions; if you pot it
temporarily I certainly wouldn't keep it in the house (or in a
greenhouse, where temps can shoot up on sunny winter days).

Gertrude Jekyll (gardening in poor soil and a relatively warm dry
county) used to make a planting hole 12ft wide and 4ft deep to provide
enough root nutrition and coolth She mentions placing boughs of fir
over the dormant bulbs in winter, as added protection. From seed they
take 6 or 7 years to flower (once only, then the flowered bulb dies
leaving offsets which take several more years to recha flowering size).
