:o))

Compare it with it's owner's site, Vilmorin below, and you can quickly
see that Sutton has very much kept to its formal post-war ways of
doing things, but so many things have changed in the world of
gardening since then, they simply are too old. I've never bought from
them. It would be a dream of mine to run a little business like that -
start from scratch and include lots of new things. I'm sure they'll be
ok and hope it's kept in Devon where it's started.

I thought it was the end of an era for Reading when Suttons moved from Reading,
Huntley and Palmers disappeared in a take over and Symonds Brewery was taken

Sorry to post off-topic, everyone, but I just need to let well-wishers
know that my grandson still has a fever, and is still on antibiotics...

You know, Judith, it occurred to me at a recent school reunion that
so much time was wasted at high school because not one of the teachers
managed to awaken in me a love of learning. That didn't come until
much, much later... I sometimes wonder what percentage of teachers
can actually _teach_ and how many merely regurgitate facts?

Early days, Anne. He's young and he's resilient. I do feel so deeply for
you - one of my children had to have a major op of a different sort and I'd
have given anything to have had it for them. Your grandson will get there .

Ah - gifted teachers. I was lucky in that I had good English and French
teachers early on but absolutely terrible maths teachers. To this day I
can't do or understand Sudoku - it's another language to me and not one to
which I have the key. But because I had good *early* arithmetic teachers, I
can add up at the speed of light!

I just wish Monday was over and done with. Martyn is a strapping lad,
and, heart problem aside, as healthy as they come, but I just worry so!
Never a good sleeper at the best of times, I scarcely get a wink of sleep

My 10 y.o. grand-daughter thinks it incredibly funny that her Nana, who can
tell at a glance exactly how many tiles will be needed for any
particular wall,
cannot for the life of her understand Sudoku... it's just totally defeats me!
I keep asking 'What is the _point_' of it! Crosswords, I absolutely love, and
find them a worthwhile challenge...

Worrying for our young never does stop. But his overall health otherwise is
hugely in his favour - really enormously so. It's a good thing this problem
has been detected and is being dealt with under controlled conditions of
choice.

Yes, I enjoy crosswords and have started doing them again - rarely
completing them I must say! But my attitude to Sudoku is exactly like
yours. It's a bit like my attitude to wind-surfing - why bother!

I can do Suduko but it's an effort whereas crosswords are always fun. I
have a book of gardening crosswords that I adapt to put in the Gardening
club newsletter. Kay gave me the book years ago as a present.
One answer stumped everyone last year. pom pon dahlias! I had to check
the spelling in the end! I always thought it was pom pom

In the interest of staving off decrepitation of the cerebral kind I have
been playing those mind games for the PC. words and logic, no problem
but 3d awareness I cannot do easily for love nor money.
Same with gardening plans, I really can't imagine in 3d!

Very sad if Suttons comes to an end. If there is land involved then I
wouldn't be surprised Wyvale buys it. They seem to be buying up every
other brown site around. The propertiesd alone will be worth a fortune
as more houses are needed, but what happens to people wanting plants
and nice centres?

Locally garden centres are closing down all the time in Holland. There are none
left in the town we live in. The nearest one in the next village is going to
focus on garden design and selling garden furniture, and will no longer sell
plants. His plants were good, but his garden design isn't. It seems that more
and more people want plantless gardens.

I don't know where you live in Holland but I have friends in Amsterdam
and Rotterdam and I found great garden centres/nurseries there,
although the last time I visited one was a few years ago so maybe
things have changed.

We live between Amsterdam and the Hague. Things have changed. There are a few
garden centres, but nowhere near as many as five years ago. The big ones
survive. The small and medium size ones have been closing. Similarly there are
derelict greenhouses all over the place.

Wouldn't Tesco under the alias of Dobbies, want to purchase it as well?
They are opening new garden centres (mostly take-overs) in the south at
least.

When did they sell out to a French company then? Why on earth did a
French company want it anyway, haven't they got enough UK stuff with the
water boards? Seems to me you can't expect the same level of commitment
to UK base enterprises if you sell out to overseas investors. They only
see the balanced books.

That would explain it as it must be at least five years since I was at

I think Vilmorin bought Suttons in 1994.

Apparently T&M is up for sale, too. Ray thinks that its present format was
the result of a management buy out.
Now I just wish that someone like Richard Branson would buy Little Chef and
turn them into really good roadside caffs like L'Arche in France! We ate

Funny, but I hate crosswords especially those that don't give proper clues
whereas I love Sudoku, it's so logical. But then I was a slow starter at
reading, not interested as a kid, and only got interested when the Maths

Just shows how early experiences influence us, I suppose. I do wish I'd
ever got a grasp of maths but one of my teachers was so wicked and so cruel
that I truly believe it frightened me off the subject for ever.

I did management training with the Forte organisation, many years

I absolutely refused to follow their guidelines on how long everything
should be cooked! *I* left everything until it was _properly_ cooked!

As for 'a portion of croutons is FIFTEEN croutons' well, I ignored that
too! Everyone got a spoonful - usually more than 15! If they thought
that I was going to stand and count out fifteen, every time someone
ordered soup, they had another think coming! 'A portion of chips is
eight ounces...'!! They were supposed to be weighed, as well!

As for the rest of their petty rules...e.g. 'a pancake must be exactly
twelve inches in diameter'!! Well, I ask you... do _you_ take a ruler
to your pancakes? ;-)

Sudoku is a puzzle of logic. The symbols can be any 9 distinct symbols -
the fact they are numbers doesn't make the puzzle mathemetical any more

Killer sudoku, otoh, does require a certain facility with arithmetic
(though not mathematics) alongside logic.

For me, Sudoku is a bit like the slide rule. I have lost count of the times
people have tried to explain both to me and given it up as hopeless. I will
freely admit that I have an instinctive brain rather more than a logical
one, so I suppose that doesn't help in the first place! OTOH, I often see
the solution to a practical problem involving the use of time and resources
three steps ahead of the rest of the family. But I think that's probably
training-by-motherhood!
I simply don't understand how you get 'into' the whole Sudoku grid, make it
work etc. in the first place. But with crosswords, I often get an
instinctive leap to the answer and have to work out why it's right
afterwards. How *that* happens, I have no way of explaining. You have a
scientific brain, I'd say, I certainly don't.

Reading is still in Berkshire but, judging from their website

Devon, in Paignton. I assume that's what Helene was referring to.

Yes, I realised that after I'd posted. It's been 'head up bum' time
today, as my grandson was undergoing open-heart surgery, and I was
awaiting news of how he was after the op. I obviously wasn't thinking
straight.

However, I now know that he came through op okay, and is in ICU.
With luck he'll be transferred to the high dependency unit tomorrow...

I think she meant Sutton's have said this, not the website has.

I may be wrong, I usually am.
