Over wintering Cape Gooseberry plants?

I grew a couple of Cape Gooseberry plants from seed in a sheltered spot
this season and got a couple of dozen small fruits eventually. I'd like
to try over wintering the plants in hopes of a bigger/earlier crop next
year.

Last year I over wintered a runner bean plant (accident), a giant Echium
(occasional fleece jacket)and an Eccromocarpus Scaber (neglect). I think
I've got the right microclimate.

I am wondering how I should prepare the Cape Gooseberry for the ordeal
ahead?

* Just ignore it?
* Cut it down soon and cover the crown with bark?
* Other?
