Planting out runner beans?

I started to plant out some runner beans which have been started in the
greenhouse, SWMBO has told me there may be frosts which will affect them.
Is it possible there will still be some frost, and what effect would it have
on the beans anyway?

Frost are always possible, even in June. I remember walking down to my
allotment and passing several with frosted potatoes. It is a case of
suck it and see, I would not plant out runner beans until well into May
in North Staffordshire.

They are already planted out here in places but I prefer to play safe and
keep them in pots in the house garden and wait till a week or so into May
before they are planted out on the allotment

But most certainly, there could still be frosts! It's only April, after all
and one should not be lulled by this fine weather. One of our staff told me
this morning that he had ice on the windshield of his car this morning and
this is balmy Devonshire! We advise people not to risk anything until mid
to end of May and even then, to listen to weather forecasts.

It will kill them. April is a bit early to plant out runners - late May
to June is better depending on when your last frost is.

The old gardeners always said don't put out anything tender 'till after
Chelsea and that still holds good even here. We had a grass frost on the 9th
June a few years back that killed a number of our cucurbits.

If anything, we're milder than some parts of Britain, less so than others
etc. But to be confident of no further frosts by now, I think Alan would
need to live in Salcombe not Windsor. ;-)

Go for it. Plant them out, and if they are killed off, there's still masses
of time for another lot.
What on earth made you start so early?!!

We may not get another frost, but it's a big risk. If you plant the
beans just inside the canes, you could wrap fleece around the cane
structure up to 2 or 3 feet, which might be enough.
Depends where you are.

Yeah, but that's just because it's been so mild/warm. It's much earlier
than it's average flowering date. The May might also get caught out as
well.
No point in worrying about it to much now Alan. What's done is done.
I'd have some fleece handy to cover it with if it looks like turning
cold again. That would hopefully keep of a lightish frost

I got overexcited and planted out half of my runner beans today (in
Herts). Fingers are firmly crossed. I know the books say June, but I'm
so impatient! Supposing there are no actual frosts, what can I expect
to happen to them? I've got plenty more seeds just in case :-)

Plant them now then, it's better to throw away some "insurance" plants that
have to wait for them to grow after losing the first lot!

I don't really follow that logic. If I lose what I've planted because
of a frost, I'm going to want to be much more circumspect about planting
their replacements, and I guess I'd want to wait until June, when the
books say.
My first batch took 11 days flat from sowing to planting out (about
12-18 inches) so I don't think I want to plant any more even if I lose
what I've aready planted for about three weeks.
And if the worst doesn't happen, I'm hoping the seeds will keep until
next year.

I have found that runner bean seeds are one of the best keepers. I have sown
half this year from an original packet bought in 2003 (packet says use before
12/2006) and half from seed saved from the 2003 crop. I know which are which
and they have all germinated and are going great guns. They are still in my
greenhouse but will be hardened off soon before planting out in a few weeks'
time. I don't do anything special to keep the seeds. The original ones are
in the original pack, and the saved ones are in a paper envelope (those old
"wages" envelopes are the perfect size). They are all kept in a cardboard
box in a utility room cupboard.
