I chased woodie away many times today but success at last, two babies
have flown out to mum and dad, I am thrilled they survived, but the
bird box will need replacing, it is really damaged and not safe for
little birds next year. Will they come back there to nest at night
until they are a bit older?

Ask on the birdwatching group, Judith. But I doubt it. I think that now
they will perch on trees, roost in them etc. They've outgrown the nest in
every sense. I think that in your shoes, I'd go to the RSPB site and look
for advice on the right boxes for your garden. If it's not there, email them
to ask them.

Thanks Sacha, I didn't know there was a site for birds. I'm not sure
I want to know too much but I have taken a liking to the bluetits. As
we are moving at the end of the year, I will buy a new box and I will
take a look at what is for sale on the site you mention.

Just down the road from me there are about 20 people staring up into
a tree with cameras, tripods and long lenses, what on earth are they
doing? Could it be my woodpecker?

Well, I'll make the experts laugh but when I looked up your description, it
matched that of a pileated woodpecker. So, who knows?!

Don't know if it helps but we had similar problems some years back with
magpies, my son had made dozens of nest boxes from our old floor boards but
they were coming under attack so we put metal plates with holes on some and
encased others in chicken wire (which soon overgrew with ivy).
Funnily enough we seldom see a magpie now, they used to nest in the garden,
not sorry to see them go as they are very noisy!

Hi Charlie,

The next box will be reinforced. I know it's the law of nature and I
am soft over some things but I just couldn't bear to see them
destroyed and to see the parents in such a state. I have never had an
interest in birds before and it may be something that I might pursue,
after my retirement in December that is.

Hi Judith

Why not get a Schwegler "woodcrete" nest box for tits.
Quote: " tough, durable mix of sawdust, concrete and clay that's rotproof, predator
proof and impervious to the worst weather. Their excellent insulating properties will
keep any nesting brood warm and sheltered, and their smart, natural looks will stay
good for decades to come."

I use them a lot on nature reserves and Great Spotted Woodpeckers can't get in.
Stoats are another matter however :-(
I would suggest:
1B Nest Box with 32mm entrance hole for tits and sparrows or 1B Nest Box with 26mm
entrance hole for tits.

HTH

Liz

PS I have no connection with Schwegler. Alternatives manufacturers may be
available.
