| I am not sure how many of you will have known him or indeed even heard of
him but Edward Needham has recently died, almost a recluse he was hard to
get to know as he was so shy a real gentleman in all senses of the word,
it was even harder to get to visit his garden, this was a copy of a
himalayan valley where he was able to grow many of the plants he
introduced to cultivation in this country.
I got to know him when writing "Gardening on the edge" for which he did
the chapter on Hedychiums. His depth of knowledge was quite extraordinary
being able to tell you not only what a plant was but which valley it had
been found in and by whom!

He was always very wary about anyone knowing exactly where his garden was
but its in Cornwall alongside one of the inlets on the south coast.

I never saw his garden but had heard of it as being one of the most
spectacular anywhere. I'm sorry to hear of his death.
