Was on the BBC1 The One Show tonight.
It's time the BBC was a bit more critical in their reporting.

We watched Panorama tonight on the horrible background to the child abuse at
Haut de la Garenne in Jersey. The title of the programme however, was a
disgrace "Jersey - Island of Secrets". This is not a responsible approach
by a serious programme made by the national 'mouthpiece'. Some aspects of
the reporting showed a bias about the island itself, not the happenings at
Haut de la Garenne and of course, implied that all islanders were complicit
in what had happened there, which is simply untrue.
One thing that puzzled me more than a little was the making of the programme
itself *before* investigations are completed or anyone is brought to trial.
I could certainly understand it being made *after* the event but beforehand
seems to me to be prejudicing the outcome, something I thought the officer
in charge of the case was keen to avoid in earlier remarks he's made to the
media.

This seems all too common nowadays.

I've complained to the BBC The One Show about their uncritical reporting of the
bus company's account of how the EU is forcing them to make busloads of OAPs hop
on and off their buses every 30 miles. Worse still was a clueless
woman/MP/Minister from the Ministry of Transport.

I have no objection to any journalistic programme opening up areas for
discussion, instituting investigations or exposing cover ups, corruption
etc. but this made me feel that, for Panorama, it was a bit showbiz. I am
serious when I say that I fear it may prejudice future legal proceedings.
Of course, some of the people responsible are now dead but others are not
and that programme presumed guilt for some still alive. I would have
thought their lawyers could use that to their advantage. It was not a
shrewd move, IMO.

Was less than happy with the confrontation of the couple in France, why
do reporters think that they are as good as a trial by jury?

That's precisely my point. That couple may or may not be guilty but they
can now claim - if ever brought to trial - that anyone hearing the case is
prejudiced against them because of the tv programme. IMO, it was very
irresponsible journalism and I am disappointed and amazed that the Jersey
police involved themselves in it.
