Author question about REIT funds

I'm thinking of investing in a REIT fund for portfolio diversity. But I
don't want to jump in at the wrong time, and I have no experience with
REITs. Assuming that the US housing market will continue to soften, and
that the economy in general will enter a reccessionary phase in 2007,
what would the outlook be for commercial-property-focused REIT funds?

Unless an opportunity REIT, a REIT would probably be "in the toilet"
