Home theatre speaker help

| I bought a Artec DR-RE 12A DVD Recorder w/Progressive Scan & Dolby 5.1 and I
hooked up the 5.1 speakers from my old DVD/5.1 player. The speakers aren't
powered and I can barely hear the sounds on the DVD's. Do I need an
amplifier or just some 120 volt powered speakers ? If I record a movie on
the Artec I can hear the sound ok on my PC.
Thanks for any help,
Pete

I'm hardly an expert, so I hope somebody else chimes in if I've got things
wrong. You don't have an amplifier nor a receiver? If you don't, then how
have you hooked up the recorder to the speakers? If you've used the 6
analog audio outs to go directly to each of your speakers and subwoofer (if
you've done this, I'm curious as to how), the player/recorder doesn't have
enough juice to give them an adequate signal.
Keep your speakers. I think a home theatre receiver is in order. You can
send the audio from the player/recorder to the receiver using an optical
cable, or better still, a digital coaxial cable. And from there, speaker
wire to each of your speakers. The receiver will give the signal far more
power than a DVD player/recorder could. And then you can actually use the
Dolby Digital 5.1 and the DTS.
Hope I've helped!

| Thanks ! you've helped a lot.. And no I don't have a receiver, the speakers
hook directly to the DVD player. It has 6 RCA connectors for the 5/1. The
Artec was kinda cheap ($89) so i'm guessing it couldn't power my
(cheap)(un-powered) speakers very well either..
I'm heading to electronic express now to look at their receivers.

| Glad to know I was able to help a bit! Do some research to determine
exactly what features you need and what you don't need (my receiver has
features I will probably never use), always bearing in mind what your budget
is. Good luck with the purchase!

| It is likely your old system was a theater in a box, with the power to fire
up those speakers. Your new receiver is likely not a theater in a box, and
you will need to get a 5.1 amp, an inexpensive one will be fine from the
local electronics store.

Those outputs are meant to go into the 5.1 analog in to the
receiver/amplifier.
