| Ok, so here's the deal... and I'm not great with explaining the
hookups. I can understand if you tell me what to do... I can read the
language, I just can't speak it.
We had a regular Comcast cable box and when we turned on the tv (an hd-
ready samsung), so with the tv on 3, it played from the box without
switching to any of the other components. The vcr was hooked up to the
tv's AV1 (that didn't change), so i could record anything from the
cable box onto the vcr... it would just record whatever was on the
screen at the time, so if I hit info or guide, that would record, too.
hopefully that tells you how things were arranged. if not, that kinda
sucks because I wasn't here when the cable guy came to hook up the new
box.
We decided to get the comcast DVR with HD, but the it's got more
cables than the usual vid/L/R, so the only way to hook it up to the tv
is through the Component 2 (that's the only hookup with the right
connections on any equipment we own). The only thing the vcr does now
is play. The cable antenna goes from the wall to the box and the dvr/
hd cables send it to the tv, then the antenna out of the tv (there is
only 1) goes to the vcr out.
I really want to be able to record things from my dvr onto tape (and
then onto dvd with my mac, which is way more user friendly...), but
I'm not sure how and I don't have the patience to dink with it.
Help? I know I haven't been clear, so ask whatever you need to know
and I'll try to answer as best as I can.
Thanks!

It's possible that the new dvr is HDCP compliant. That may add a
certain degree of difficulty to getting anything off of the dvr and
onto another recording device.
Here's more info on HDCP.....
High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is a form of Digital
Rights Management (DRM) developed by Intel Corporation to control
digital audio and video content as it travels across Digital Visual
Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), or
Unified Display Interface (UDI) connections. The specification is
proprietary, and creating an implementation of HDCP requires a
license.
HDCP is licensed by Digital Content Protection, a subsidiary of Intel.
In addition to paying fees, licensees agree to limit the capabilities
of their products. For example, high-definition digital video content
must be restricted to DVD quality on non-HDCP compliant video outputs
when requested by the source. DVD-Audio content is restricted to DAT
quality on non-HDCP digital audio outputs (analog audio outputs have
no quality limits). Licensees cannot allow their devices to make
copies of content, and must design their products in ways that
"effectively frustrate attempts to defeat the content protection
requirements." [1]
