Author Question about hot water heater

In the past few days my hot water heater has been making a sound off and
on like a whistling tea kettle, high pitched and annoying. It will last
for about 45 seconds and then stop. Does it maybe 5 or 6 times a day.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is? TIA.
