Author question about galvanized plastic pipe

I have galvanized plastic pipe, it's gray, in my house. I wanted to add
a new line to a second hot water heater. I cut the line were I need to
sweat in the line to the new hot water heater but every time I apply
heat, the line starts to melt or catch fire. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks and this is a great forum.

we join 2" plastic water mains with a buttweld.

basicly melt the two ends till they look like fish lips then mush together;
requires special tools.

I went to a local hardware store and told the plumbing slaesman about
the buttweld problems I have. He sold me a metal tee and some clamps to
put it all back together.

Thanks for the help.
