| Hi all,
I'm a 3rd year EEE undergrad and am conducting a project into the sources /
victims of RFI as well as possible solutions to the problem, can anyone
suggest any particularly good standards to read?
So far I've looked at BSI:
61000-6-1
61000-6-2
61000-6-3
61000-6-4
61000-6-6
61000-5-1
61000-5-2
and 55011 aka CISPR 11
Thanks
Chris

| Where are you located? Do you have library access?

I'm in Nottingham UK and have access to a good engineering library with
e-access to the BSI standards via the Athens system.

| Chris - It seems to me that you need access to persons who have worked
on real EMC problems to understand how the standards help to reduce or
eliminate problems before they start. Try googling on ECMA. That is
the acronym for the European Computer Manufacturers Association. There
should be a list of the various committees. Look for the EMC committee
and try to find the names of some officers, and then contact them
directly. I was the Bell Labs (AT&T-USA) representative to the EMCA
EMC committee for many years before I retired in 2001, but I haven't
had any association with them since then. You can e-mail me directly
if you want to discuss further.

In case you're not already familiar with them, can I suggest two books
by Tim XXXXXXXX (and Keith Armstrong) as essential background reading:
1. EMC for Product Designers, ISBN 0750649305
Amazon page at
<http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...4957410-9818237>
2. EMC for systems and Installations, ISBN 0750641673

| Chris:
You need to get a copy of CISPR-22. Also it sounds like you need to
talk to some real persons who can tell you about real-life EMC problems
and how the standards helped prevent EMC problems. For instance,
computers that meet CISPR-22 are unlikely to cause interference to
nearby television sets and radios.
I would suggest you try to get hold of the Institue of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers (IEEE) EMC Society annual symposium proceedings.
The IEEE is similar to the UK IEE engineering society. The IEEE annual
symposium proceedings have lots of information on all phases of EMC and
you should be able to get a lot of information.
David Imeson of the UK would be a good local contact. He is at:
Dave.Imeson@btinternet.com Send him some e-mail and see if he can't
help you. We were both at the Japanese VCCI 20th anniversary meeting
in Tokyo last month and he is very knowledgeable about all phases of
EMC.
