hi
can anyone pl. let me know what is floating voltage?
and why UPS output in some cases is floating? what are the advantages
and disadvantages of a floating voltage system? pl. eloberate.
Regards

floating voltage as far as I know has to do with charging the batteries. the
charging voltage "floats" depending on the charge of the battery.
Do some research on battery chargers and battery types to find your
situation.

If it's floating, all potentials are segregated from earth potential.
Advantages.... duh
Olivetti used to want everything floating and capacitive grid to earth for
shields.
The thought behind it is to segregate mains electrical noise....
Personally I'd prefer everything nicely strapped down to earth and diagnose
the noise sources, then fix them.

We recently had a series of ELCB's tripping and it took some time to track
it down to a VSD isolation switch (metal) replaced with a PVC unit. It was
allowing EMR to be induced into the frame of the building which back fed
into the terminals. Then when conditions were right, it tripped the
ELCB/RCD.
While this wouldn't have happened with a floating system, it's a band-aid
not a solution.

Your reply was much too technical for the OP who was obviously a
newbie!

A UPS 'floats the voltage to keep the batteries charged. If the voltage is
not high enough the batteries will die and not hold a charge. This is
common to all UPS systems.

For example I have several UPSs at work that have forty 12 volt batteries in
series in multiple parallel banks. Disconnected from the UPS (during
maintenance cycles) they sit at 480 volts but when connected to the UPS they
are floated at 540 volts. Consider voltage as a pressure that will force
the charge into the battery string. Without that pressure the batteries
would not charge and likely sulphate (sulphur coating the lead plates)
leading to their demise.

Cheers ... Bob
