UK electrical question

| I have some 2 core SY type cable. Is it permissible to use the wire
braid as an earth conductor, as in SWA type, or must 3 core with
green/yellow core be used to carry mains supplies?

You would need to know what the effective cross-sectional area of
the braid is, to be sure it is sufficient for the protective
device in use. I just looked at one set of data, and that wasn't
specified. Alternatively, you could measure the earth fault loop
impedance (although it could vary from one sample to another) or
always ensure all supplies to such cables are RCD protected.

Thanks. Again, in my data the braid cross section is not specified,
so some tests might be in order. Its difficult to ensure that a
portable appliance is always RCD protected, although everything at
our site is.
