I m replacing the wall switch and the ceiling light in the second bathroom. This is a 2 wire house built in 1954. Looking in the 2 boxes I see many wires. One cable entering the switch box has 3 wires. This is the first I have even seen this is my house, and I have over the years been in many of the boxes. The red connects to a white from another cable entering the box. The white from the first mentioned cable connects to the black of the second mentioned cable, and these two connect to the white switch wire. The Black from the first (3 wire) cable goes to the other side of the switch. In the light box there are 3 cables. The first has 3 wires, with the red going this time to the black of the second cable. The white from the second cable connects to the white of the third cable and to the light. The white from the first cable connects to the black from the third cable. The black from the first cable goes to the other side of the light. I would like to add a 120v socket to the switch or the light, but this wiring totally confuses me. Over the years I had noticed several of my sockets the white was connected to the hot and the black to the common, which I fixed. Maybe I should not have. Also, I just replaced the socket behind the fridge and I saw another 3 wire cable. Black and red going to the socket and white grounding to the box. Ideas? Wiring attachment
